FAQ

How to Navigate Without a Compass, or with it?

Although a compass does not tell you where you're going, it can help you get back to your home in case you lose your bearings.

You can navigate using three different methods:

  1. By landmarks
  2. By magnetic North (using a compass)
  3. By stars

Landmarks are objects that you recognize when you see them. These can be trees, buildings, rivers, and so on. Landmarks can be useful because they are a visual indicator of where you're at.

Magnetic North simply means the direction where the Earth’s magnetic field points. The sun appears to be moving across sky if you look up. However, the earth's magnet field causes the sun to move about the earth. So, while the sun seems to move across the sky, it really moves around the horizon. The sun is directly overhead at noon. At midnight, the sun is directly below you. Because the earth's magnet field is constantly changing, the exact position of the magnetic North Pole changes every day. This means that sometimes you may be off course for quite a while.

Another way to navigate is with stars. The stars appear to rise or set above the horizon. These points are in space and can be used to locate your position relative to other places.

What is the first thing you should do in a survival situation?

Assessing the situation is the first thing you should do in an emergency. It is essential to understand what is going on around you, where you are, and how you got there.

Also, you need to be aware of what your environment can offer. For instance, you might not be in a position to communicate with anyone if you are far from civilization.

If you don’t know what you are doing, you should start learning as quickly as you can.

If you are in imminent danger, you should seek help right away. If you're safe, you may want to spend some time gathering information and trying to figure out what has happened.

What are some basic survival skills in the wild environment?

You must know how to start a fire when living off the land. It's more than lighting a match. You must also learn how to make a fire with friction and flint. You must also know how to not get burned by the flames.

You will need to be able to construct shelter from natural materials like leaves, grasses and trees. To keep warm at night, you'll need to be able to use these materials in the best way. You should also know how much water your body needs to survive.

Other Survival Skills

While these things can help you live longer, they won't be as important as learning how to light a flame. While you may be able to eat many different species of animals and plants, you won’t be able cook them if it isn’t possible to light a flame.

Additionally, you'll need to know the best places and methods to find food. You could become sick or starve if you don't have this knowledge.

What do you do in a survival situation?

There's not much time for you to think about what next. Make sure you're ready for anything. Prepare for any unexpected situation by knowing how to respond.

If you aren't sure what to do, you must be able to adapt.

In a survival situation, you'll probably face problems like:

  • Being stuck in a remote location
  • Getting lost
  • Having limited food supplies
  • Water running low
  • Facing hostile people
  • Face to face with wild animals
  • Finding shelter
  • Predators can be defeated
  • Making fire
  • Use tools
  • Building shelters
  • Hunting
  • * Fishing
