Mike Vilhauer's story

When Mike Vilhauer was out fishing in California, he was lost in the woods for a week. He had lost his direction and was headed back too late so he settled under a pine for shelter from the scorching sun. The next morning, he was hungry and dehydrated, so he drank from puddles. He wandered around the streets trying to find an escape route, but he was unsuccessful.

After five days of hiking in the mountains, Mike had a revelation: He realized he was completely lost and needed help. He wrote to his family, explaining his situation and apologizing for his mistakes. He saw a helicopter over his head on Aug. 10. He swung his arms in the air to attract the attention of the pilot, who spotted him and alerted the search and rescue crews to his location. Rescuers were sent from eight or nine counties, including the state of Nevada, and his story was told on national television.

Adrian Knopps' tale

After surviving seven days in Alaskan wilderness alone, Adrian Knopps (an electrician) survived a brutal bear hunt and was reunited with his friend. Knopps was desperate for help as the two men had separated. Knopps' companion had fled into the rife, leaving Knopps alone, surrounded with bears and wolf pack. The storm was battering them with 70-mph winds and no cell service, and he was slipping into hypothermia and hallucinating. Coast Guard officials said that they'd never seen anyone survive extreme wilderness conditions.

Knopps was nearly soaked to the bone by the storm. He was exhausted and hypothermic, but he never lost his faith. The Coast Guard reached out to Knopps' wife and flew her to the rescue. Knopps was left with severe hypothermia. He had hallucinations and his feet were swollen. However, he never lost heart. He still considers it a bizarre accident that happened without explanation.
